It was hot and my press was almost totally out. I use to sing in the choir at Trinity Baptist Church. My father was a Deacon and my mother taught Sunday school. I was always in Church growing up; so I guess I was destined to be either a holy roller or a holy mess. I fervently fanned myself as beads of sweat cascaded across my brow, serving as testament to my losing battle to stay somewhat cool in this furnace, masquerading as a Church. As I struggled with the heat, the church doors swung open revealing an oasis of handsome glory. The most handsome boy I ever saw walked into Trinity. He was the cat’s meow; medium build, not that tall, and hazel eyes as soft as the honey hues that lingered within them. After the service there was a barbecue for the Father’s, as it was father’s day. The women each brought dishes, probably prepared the night before into the early morning hours. My mother sure had me and my sister up all night peeling potatoes for her famous potato salad. There was enough food to feed each starving child, in each country on the planet. Potato salad, Cole slaw, Chop Barbecue, Fried Chicken, Baked Macaroni and Cheese, Peach Cobbler, and Banana Pudding, just to name a few, lined the lengthy picnic tables in the church yard. It was amazing to see those church mother’s delighting in presenting food to their flock. They fussed and prepped the tables all while bossing the servers around with threats and reminders of what to, and not to do. I was one of the servers, being bullied and cajoled. Outside was way cooler but serving was still a drag. Not to mention, I was still recuperating from the Church heat. All that discomfort melted from thought once William held his plate before me. I spooned a hefty helping of greens onto the handsome young man with the hazel eye’s anxious plate. Would a thought I spooned gold and diamonds up on there, cause he smiled so dam hard that I was pleased with myself. Such a simple act had us standing there grinning at each other like two fools. “Thank You Miss…?” “Althea.” I smiled and answered. “Nice to meet you Miss Althea. See you around.” After serving I sat with my sister at one of the church picnic tables, while we joked over who had peeled the most potatoes. I knew something was up when my sister stopped talking mid-sentence. I could tell someone was standing behind me and I turned to see Mr. Hazel eyes grinning at me. “Ms. Althea, I was wondering if I could have a minute of your time.” “Sure.” I said as I stood and walked away from the table with him. The silence I left behind was as thick as sun hardened molasses. I knew my sister must have been jealous. I grinned some more, thinking of this as I walked away. “Thanks for your time Ms. Althea. I was wondering if I could have the pleasure of walking you to church next Sunday.” “Sure you could walk me to church. However I require one thing, before I go gallivanting down any Queen’s streets with you.” He looked a little unsure of himself once I said that. “Name it.” “Well, I make it a habit to not walk down streets with strangers. So before you accompany me anywhere, I would like to at least know your name.” He smiled even harder this time, showing off beautiful straight white teeth interrupted by a small split between the two in front. “William. My name is William, Miss Althea.”
